Small speakers that sound big? Most experienced audiophiles would laugh at the idea. This 6 speaker package introduces a patent pending Ventriloquist center channel that solves one home theater's oldest problems. Practically all other home theaters with micro-satellites have a gaping hole in frequency response from 80- 250 Hz. This “lower mid-range/upper bass suck out” makes male vocals, guitars, and pianos sound distant and thin. It leaves micro-satellite owners feeling unfulfilled. The Ventriloquist center channel solves the problem by supporting the micro-satellites with powerful upper-bass lower midrange reinforcement.

Sound & Vision columnist Professor Ken Pohlmann complained about the phenomenon in the April 2003 Sound & Vision: "Small cabinets without real woofers simply cannot reproduce the all-important bottom end of classical music. The gap between the subwoofer's upper limits and where the satellites give up the ghost cuts out the balls of Beethoven, the warmth of Brahms, the power of Wagner."

Hsu Research addresses the issue with the Ventriloquist center channel. The two dual voice coil 4” x 6” woofers in the center reinforce the lower midrange and upper bass for the micro satellites. With the less directional notes anchored to the center, the soundstage remains as stable as with other micro-satellite systems. The improvement is a dramatically flatter frequency response and sound as powerful as 5-inch woofer bookshelf systems. This weaving together of specialized speakers results in a more unified presentation--without the hole in the bass. Incedentaly, sending the 80 – 250 Hz frequencies to the subwoofer would ruin the soundstage.

In addition to the sound quality, a special rear center channel allows 6 channel sound from 5 channel sources. The system works by matrixing the back rear channels.

Word of mouth has generated a following for this system. If someone you know bought an expensive home theater system recently, you may not want to play this system for them. It could lead to buyer's remorse!

Note: the special rear center channel can matrix (i.e. mix) 5 channel sound to create 6 channel sound, or be used for discreet 6 channel sound!

Industry Reviews

“…it will astonish you”
Stereophile Guide to Home Theater (Oct 2003)

“HSU Research is torturing the competition with an almost painfully low priced and ingeniously designed sub/sat set...Value: 95/100”
Home Theater Magazine (Mar 2004)

“I was surprised by the VT-12's ability to play loud, with full, clean dynamics — plenty loud enough for material like live jazz combo recordings at real-world club levels...By coming up with a novel solution to a longstanding challenge, and by refusing to be bound by hard-and-fast speaker-design “rules,” Hsu Research has produced an astonishing little system.”
Daniel Kumin, Sound & Vision (Oct 2004)

“Sound was terrific...I really cannot think of how one could get better performance in a similar-sized package, and get that kind of performance in any similarly priced system, no matter what its size.”
Howard Ferstler, Sensible Sound (Sept/Oct 2004)

“Editor's Choice...we guess Hsu Research never heard the old expression 'You can't fool Mother Nature'--because it went ahead and crafted a (mostly) teensy 6-channel speaker package that sounds a lot bigger than it should...an incredible value...the VT-12's richly balanced musicality is ahead of every other affordable mini package we've heard...8.2/10”
Steve Guttenberg, CNET (March 2004)

Customer Testimonials

"I'm a classical music radio host so, on the job, I listen to music through high-end studio equipment... I was confident that the [VTF-3 MK 2] would be superlative (which it is), but I was astonished by the sound of the Ventriloquist speakers. Whether I'm listening to movie audio, CDs or radio, the sound is rich, clear and 'musical."
Alan Chapman, Morning Anouncer on KUSC-FM, LA Classical Public Radio
